A young group of Syrians, possessing a wealth of knowledge and skill in carpentry, gypsum, and interior design, met at the end of 2017 after relocating to Jordan. They shared a deep knowledge of the arts and had a strong passion for handicrafts. They decided to take on the challenge of creating a professional company that sells products that embody their Syrian heritage, and thus, Handicraft Skills Development (HSD) was born. HSD uses high-quality, natural, raw elements such as stone, wood, and industrial material such as polystyrene and epoxy to craft unique products that revive the traditional Syrian culture.
In 2018, HSD began training local community members in the mosaic arts to bring economic empowerment to the community by creating new jobs. They support people with disabilities as the group, themself, struggled to rehabilitate and re-join the community after being injured during the war in Syria. Though they faced many obstacles, they were able to not only recover but use their collective experience to help others who had similar stories.
