Dhaibeya Al-Sharif

Syria

With the aim of supporting Syrian women artisans, Souq Fann, in collaboration with Syria Livelihoods Program (SLP), funded by USAID, trained and mentored women artisans in Malikiyah City in Northeast Syria.

Through the training, these women produced intricate designs through which they were able to create a path to a sustainable income and improved livelihoods conditions.

These products are a reflection of the hard work and dedication that these women artisans have put into their craft, although they were faced with many challenges including not having money to buy materials or equipment, combined with the horrors of the conflict, they have endured, preserved, and made sure that they reflected that in their products. Out of those ambitions, the "Syrian Touches" brand was born to be a mark of resilience and perseverance of these women.

Through Syrian Touches, we present you with handicrafts made by Syrian women who have turned their hardships into opportunities and their tribulations into triumphs."

Dhaibeya’s Store

Dhahibeya Mohammad Al-Sharif is a craftswoman in the field of knitting and wool weaving. Sewing and knitting have been her hobbies since childhood, however she has focused her craft on knitting, as it requires less expensive equipment and raw materials, especially with her current difficulties and challenging financial situation as a resident of Nowruz camp for internally displaced persons.

From woolen threads bearing meaningful colors (black for bitter displacement, red for blood, and green and yellow for hope), Dhaibeya weaves beautiful coasters in a variety of geometric shapes to suit different tastes. It takes about three to five hours to make each coaster.

Her difficult circumstances and dire challenges have not stood in the way of Dhaibeya’s development and continuity. She has participated in several training programs while residing in the camp, and has been able to refine her personality, develop her skills, and organize her time. Today, she continues towards her dream of owning a workshop where she can teach girls knitting and sewing.
